Beach wedding in Denmark, August 2018

what happened so far

Actually, we just wanted to go on vacation…

The route was planned and the accommodation was booked. Well, what can you do in Denmark? Our research showed never-ending beaches, numerous attractions… and a bonafide wedding industry geared for international couples.

Well, since we were there… Thus the events took their course.

Preparation

After initial uncertainties, we soon realized how easy it is to get married in Denmark: fill out the single-paged application, send the scanned documents by e-mail, transfer the fees to a bank account in Germany, select the date.

On the day before the ceremony: submit original documents to the public office. This was followed by a spontaneous, warm welcome by the encouraging registrar, with whom we confirm the details, e.g. in which language we would like to hold the ceremony.

According to a study, the Danes are the happiest people in Europe.
At this point the theory arises that the organisation of the state might have something to do with this.

Onward:
As usual, the Groom is in desperate need of a haircut.
And a wedding without flowers, says the bride, just wouldn’t be right.
We also met the photographer. As hard as it was for him, Ed had to admit that he couldn’t be the groom and the photographer at the same time.

The big day

Following the principle of equal treatment for all, we kept “Project M” completely secret. Everyone in the know was directly involved. Only our own children remained as guests – who of course were not allowed to find out anything.

After a morning on the beach, spiffed up under various false pretenses and carted off to the lighthouse beach. This left the soon-to-be-married almost a quarter of an hour to prepare for the coming event.

Each child was slipped a different facet of the event  –  in utmost confidence – as the reason for the whole effort: “Photos will be taken”, “A special guest is coming”, “There’s a special meal “… We watched them eagerly awaiting the exchange of information. The mystery was unbearable, but they kept tight and didn’t tell each other anything!

What?
Enough talk, let’s see some photos?
here you go!

We took a cordial farewell to the registrar and the inevitable, kitschy photo shooting followed. Fortunately, we were able to hack to suit our own purposes.

After the official part was over, the children ran off to the dunes and we celebrated our coup. We wed on the smallest possible scale and with a minimum of effort. Still, the tension was great, as was the relief that we had finally made it.

Ten days later…

we celebrated with the family in Trier. We had asked Claudia for help and, tit for tat, all details about our celebration had been kept secret from us. What else could we expect?

Whatever we thought, this went far beyond our expectations.
The Monaise Palace, built around 1780 in the early classical french style, with it’s beautiful terrace, vast land and dock on the Mosel river,  was the perfect setting.

Our thanks to:

the commune of Varde
for their kind support and the warm ceremony,

Anja for the great photos,

Dominique und Tony for their organizational and above all moral support,

Claudia and Barbara for the fabulous party organization in Trier,

and last but not least all our guests for their company, their gifts and their good wishes.
